The Hays Arts Council annually presents a creative writing contest in prose and poetry for Ellis County students in Kindergarten through 12th grade. After works are submitted through anonymous codes, the FHSU English Department serves as the judging panel, this year chaired by faculty member, Morgan Chalfant. Judges award 1st, 2nd, 3rd, & Honorable Mention awards. Through the support of the Hays Optimist Club, books of the winning works are published and presented to winning students with award ribbons.
Traditionally, an awards ceremony and reception is also held for the students, their families and teachers. We were unable to hold the public ceremony this year, but instead featured the poems and short stories at one of our 2021 Spring Art Walk locations, recognizing these students' literary artworks.
