About SLMM

THE SOCIETY OF LAYERISTS IN MULTI-MEDIA (SLMM) is an international organization founded in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1982 by the late Mary Carroll Nelson. Past president, Laura Pope, wrote that Mary Carroll was a true visionary who founded this society as a network of like-minded artists who share the holistic perspective that art reflects the mental, technical, and spiritual evolution of the artist. It is a belief that the individual is connected, in material structure, with the entire Universe, and is also linked to others, within the mind by a memory of shared human history. This philosophy was adopted as the PREMISE OF SLMM and is what connects members of the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media to this day. Mary Carroll Nelson was a brilliant woman who never stopped researching and studying to learn more about this world we live in. As an author, she shared her wisdom in the numerous books and articles she has published. She was a warm and gracious hostess who welcomed everyone with a bright smile, a twinkle in her eye, and a penchant for fun and laughter. Mary Carroll passed away in 2022, 40 years after she founded SLMM. In Mary Carroll Nelson's own words, "Layering is an evanescent metaphor that grows like moss from living and learning. Often there is a sense of something 'other' than the visible in Layered art. The kinship among Layerists is their openness to inspiration from all aspects of their lives and their shared perception of an underlying connectedness to everything.”

To The Stars is the theme for the 2025 national exhibition and conference, being considered the perfect catalyst for the Society of Layerists in Multi-Media members to unleash their creativity. Their layered artwork reflects an imaginative exploration of our interconnected, holistic existence. Viewers are invited to see each piece as a vision of a future in harmony with the universe- one that reminds us the journey begins within. We dedicate this exhibition, TO THE STARS, to the late Mary Carroll Nelson, SLMM Founder.

Mary Carroll Nelson ~ 2021

"Holism refers to the concept of Oneness. I have faith in the power of a holistic intention. By making our SLMM website, books and virtual or gallery shows known on a larger scale, we can offer leavening and a possible blessing to others who might pick up on the true meaning of holistic thinking. My new thought is to promote vigorous activity throughout SLMM. Get our work and our premise into public consciousness. Activate the power we hold in common. I believe SLMM can make a difference."
